Despite the doubts of Alaska not having a substantial music scene, Sovereign Shadows have been one of multiple bands that are keeping the Alaskan underground music scene alive. In the early days of the band, the founding members, Anthony and Sean, started writing music together back in 2010. Three years later, the line up for the band became official. Since coming together completely they had the opportunity to open up for Unearth, 36 Crazyfists, and are scheduled to open up for Suicide Silence this upcoming September. They also played The Road to Warped Tour, which featured bands like Memphis May Fire, We Came As Romans, Issues, PVRIS, TAT, New Found Glory, Helmet, MC Lars, The Wonder Years & Motion City Soundtrack. The Alaskan music scene is a lot more alive than we thought. So don’t be fooled, Alaska has a lot more to offer than Sarah Palin watching Russia from her house.

Over the years they have released their debut EP “The Lost”, which is available for download on Reverbnation, and will soon be on Itunes. Their next EP, “Fight to the End”, is schedule for release mid-July! From what we’ve listened to so far, their music can best be described as having this thrashy, sort of grungy metal-core style. In terms of the influences behind their sound, although it was difficult for them to do so, they eventually narrowed it down to bands like Unearth, As I Lay Dying, and In Flames. If those are bands that peak your interest, we would recommend you check out what they have put out so far, and to also keep an eye out for their new EP being released next month!
Q&A TIME
If you could tour anywhere in the country where would you go?
SS: “Honestly we would tour the entire world to experience all of the different fans and crowd reactions possible because every state has something new and different to offer. We believe that we offer something unique and fresh to the Metal genre and influence our sound that is ever evolving.”
How would you sum up your music scene in one sentence?
SS: “Our Scene is very Supportive, Unified, and like Family; no matter what genre is involved the love is there whether its in the pit getting picked up, rocking out to more melodic slow jams, or breathing life into new and rising local bands.”
